Infant Massage
More and more parents are learning the power of touch in communicating with their babies. Infant massage is a process that involves a pattern of hand movements over baby's face, arms, hands, chest, abdomen, back, legs and feet using massage oil and a parent's gentle touch.
The benefits of infant massage for babies include relieving discomfort from teething, congestion, gas and colic, and emotional stress. All areas of the body are stimulated by massage -- it can improve muscle tone and circulation, increase sensory awareness, increase nutrition and oxygen flow to cells, aide in digestion, help infants to sleep deeper and longer, and help the brain and nervous system grow and develop.
Infant massage helps parents learn how to read their infant's cues and respond to their baby more readily. Parents learn to communicate with their infant through touch. Spending time massaging an infant can help ease the stress many working parents feel when they are separated from their child during the day. Massage helps both parent and baby slow down and unwind from a busy day and provides a time of day when the parent is totally focused on their baby.
Lakeview Medical Center offers infant massage instruction through a three-class program by a certified infant massage instructor. Your instructor will demonstrate massage techniques, provide information on infant cues and discuss the benefits of massage. This is an interactive, fun and informative class with parents learning and practicing massage techniques on their infant during class.
Classes are designed for babies one month of age through pre-crawling. Class time is flexible due to the age of the infants involved, and parents will be encouraged to feed or change their baby as needed during class time. Parents are encouraged to bring their infants favorite blanket.

Managing Lymphedema
Lymphedema is the result of swelling in the extremities or other parts of the body. People with lymphedema have a deficiency in the flow of lymph fluid. They may experience small or large amounts of swelling with weeping of fluid, hardening of the area, and skin deterioration.
The signs of lymphedema can include:
- Full or heavy feeling in an arm or leg
- A tight feeling in the skin on the arm or leg
- Less movement or flexibility in your hand, wrist, ankle
- Difficulty fitting into clothing in one specific area such as the sleeve of your jacket or your socks being too tight
- Your ring, watch, and bracelet feel tight, but you have not gained weight
Treatment of Lymphedema at Lakeview Medical Center is provided by a Physical Therapist and Physical Therapist Assistant who are Certified Lymphedema Therapists through the Academy of Lymphatic Studies.
Typical treatments first determine each patient's needs, followed by Complete Decongestive Therapy using:
- Manual lymph drainage
- Compression bandaging
- Fitting for compression garments
- Exercise programs
- Skin and would care
- Self-management instruction
You can benefit from Lymphedema treatment if you have had disruptions to the lymphatic system caused by:
- Surgical removal of the lymph nodes during a mastectomy or prostate surgery
- Radiation treatment
- Birth defects of the lymphatic system with either too few or impaired lymph vessels
- Chronic venous insufficiency
Lymphedema management can also help those with edema due to:
- Traumatic injury (ankle sprains, deep bruises)
- Orthopedic surgeries (total knee replacement, tendon surgeries)
- Migraine headaches and sinus headaches

Stroke Support Group
In 1999 Lakeview Medical Center teamed with the American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association to form the Northwoods Area Stroke Support Group. "We educate stroke survivors and their family members, including spouses, siblings, parents and children on recurrent stroke prevention and provide emotional support,” said Betsy Salquist, coordinator of the Stroke Support Group and Speech-Language Pathologist at Lakeview Medical Center. "Spouse's carry as much stress and frustration as the stroke survivor. They need a place to vent these feelings and discuss them with others who have been in their shoes. Likewise, for stroke survivors it is comforting to be around others who have had a stroke. It helps them not feel so alone.”
The Northwoods Area Stroke Support Group meets the last Thursday of every other month (Jan., March, May, July, Sept. and Nov.) at Lakeview Medical Center in the Medical Arts/Health Resource building at 3:00 p.m. "We average about 20 people per meeting, coming from Rice Lake, Chetek, Dallas, Barron, Ladysmith, Spooner, Shell Lake and Cumberland,” added Salquist. "Attendees are ages 40 to 90 and some range from three months post-stroke to over 10 years post-stroke.”
